STEP-BY-STEP BUILD PROCESS
Follow these stages in order — always referring to your engineering drawings.

Plan, Approve & Set Out The Site
Confirm whether your patio needs a building permit, then set out the footprint with string lines. Mark the post positions accurately to your plan and check the layout is square by measuring the diagonals. Careful setting-out makes every following stage easier.

Dig & Pour The Footings
Dig the footing holes to the size and depth shown on your engineering drawings. These hold-down footings anchor your posts against WA wind loads, so accuracy matters. Brace the posts plumb and pour the concrete, then allow it to cure.

Stand & Plumb The Posts
Position the posts over the footings (or fix them to existing brackets), plumb them in both directions and brace them securely. Double-check heights and falls so your roof will drain correctly once it's on.

Fix The Beams & Attach To The House
Bolt the beams to the posts to the engineered details. For an attached patio, fix the wall bracket or back beam to the house fascia or brickwork as specified, ensuring it's level and properly flashed to keep water out.

Install The Rafters & Battens
Fit the rafters across the beams at the spacings on your plan, keeping everything square and evenly set out. Add any battens or top hats ready to receive the roof sheeting, and check the fall before sheeting up.

Lay The Roof Sheeting
Lay and fix the Colorbond® or insulated roof sheeting with the correct screws and pattern, working to the laps on your plan. Fit the flashings where the patio meets the house and the barge capping to the edges to keep it weathertight.

Add Gutters, Downpipes & Finish
Install the gutter and downpipes to carry water away, fit any infill or trims, then tidy up the site. Give everything a final check against your drawings and your new patio is ready to enjoy.

Not Checking Measurements Properly
Incorrect measurements can lead to ordering the wrong size structure. Always double-check your measurements before ordering.
Ignoring Council Requirements
Some patios and sheds may require approvals before construction begins. Failing to check this can cause delays and extra costs.
Building Footings Incorrectly
Footings are one of the most important parts of the structure. Footings that are too small, too shallow or incorrectly positioned can cause problems later.
Not Reading The Plans First
Many DIY builders rush straight into construction. Taking time to read the drawings and instructions before starting can prevent mistakes.
Not Checking Levels And Square
If posts, footings or frames are not level and square, the rest of the build can become much more difficult.
Tightening Everything Too Early
It is often easier to leave bolts slightly loose until the frame is fully assembled and aligned. Final tightening should happen once everything is in the correct position.
Working Without Enough Help
Large beams, roof sheets and structural components can be heavy and difficult to handle alone. Having extra help can make installation safer and easier.
Forgetting About Drainage
Good water drainage is important. Make sure gutters, downpipes and surrounding ground levels allow water to flow away from the structure.
